Risk of Abduction - Traveling Safely with Children
There is very little point in expounding the statistics on the risks of child abduction.
The recent distressing case of little Madelaine McCann is enough of a worrying statistic in itself to send any self respecting, loving parent into a tailspin.
There are some simple yet golden rules to follow to ensure your child will never be featured in one of those terrible headlines.
The first rule is to never let your child wander away from you.
Not even for a second.
It is so tempting while struggling with suitcases, hand luggage and travel documents, to let go of the little hand in yours.
Do not risk it.
If possible, find a seat, sit your child on a suitcase in front of you while you juggle with papers and money.
Under pressure, it is so easy to relinquish your control on your child but you must never give in to the temptation.
If you are being hurried along by airport officials to produce documents or anything else for that matter, try to ignore their priorities; think of your own and that of your child. If necessary, remind people you have to consider your child first.
I saw an interesting technique put into practice by a vigilant mother recently.
She was carrying at least four shopping bags plus her handbag and was pushing a buggy, holding a toddler by the hand.
When she had to let go of the toddler's hand to pay the cashier, she gently applied pressed down upon the protruding toe piece of the child's sandal with her foot.
The toddler could not move without the mother feeling the toe being withdrawn from beneath her foot, she had her hand free to accept her change and everyone was safe.
I thought it an ingenious albeit simple control.
Take the time to talk to your child seriously about the risks of trusting strangers.
Small children have a vivid imagination so try not to frighten them with tales of abduction, just explain carefully and gently that they must not go anywhere with a stranger, no matter how helpful and convincing that stranger might sound.
Do not allow your child to investigate public conveniences in restaurants and shops alone.
Never leave your child unattended, even if they are asleep and unlikely to wake. Remember, the one time they will wake up and find themselves alone might be the last time you see them. Waking, the first instinct is to find Mummy.
If Mummy is not there, then the second instinct is to find her.
Consider the tragic possibilities before you leave a child sleeping somewhere.
Never leave your child alone in the car while you pay for petrol unless there is an adult in the car with them.
Small kiddies can be a nightmare when you have to wake them up from a deep sleep, unbuckle them, remove them from car seats, go to the petrol cashier across a cold garage forecourt, and then put them back in the car again, but you will have to put up with it for peace of mind.
The more you do it, the sooner the child will get used to it until it becomes a tedious routine.
Your child might be playing on the beach, building sandcastles and having a wonderful time.
Just because the child is having a good time it does not mean they are safe.
Remember that someone else other than yourself might be watching your child play with prurient interest. Watch them constantly, and never think you can go to the shop for ten minutes or spare twenty minutes to have lunch.
It takes seconds to abduct a child and a lifetime of grief and horror is the result.
Carry plenty of things for your child to do.
Children are happier if they are occupied and less likely to wander off to seek diversion.
Any reasonably sized handbag will accommodate a small coloring book and pencils, an electronic game, a snack and a story book.

'After all,' she said, 'we have all done it; we have all left our children unattended at some time.
' Well actually, I have not. Although my heart goes out to the parents of Madelaine, I cannot agree with the statement that we have all left our children sleeping in a strange apartment unattended.
My daughter is nineteen years old and thankfully has reached adulthood without any dreadful experiences of being abducted or abused.
I consider myself as a mother to be fortunate but I do not consider my child's safety had much to do with luck. Vigilance over her safety was a constant priority in my life until she was old enough to attend to her own security. Do not rely too heavily on an older child to supervise a younger one.
Again, it is tempting to share responsibility, but while traveling there is so much to see that is different and unfamiliar, any child, no matter what age or how sensible, might be excused a lapse in concentration.

Some time ago, he also created a poster for his room that reads "If I get too angry, I walk away from the situation".
That has helped remind him to take a breather when needed and cool off.

How to Trick Kids Into Liking Healthy Snacks: Five Healthy Snacks For Kids
Choosing good healthy snacks for kids challenges parents but not as much as getting them to actually eat them!
The solution, of course, is to trick kids into eating healthy snacks and learning to like them. I've raised four kids and my wife and I have seven more who are 'works in progress.
' We certainly have our share of kids who turn their noses up at things that are good for them.
What is a good healthy snack for kids? Kid's nutrition is under attack like never before! Childhood obesity is a growing trend and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that childhood obesity has tripled in the last 30 years.
Nearly 20% of children between the ages of 6 - 11 are obese and adolescents ages 12-19 are not far behind at just under 19%. Obese youth are more likely at risk for cardiovascular disease, including high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
They also have higher incident of bone and joint problems, sleep apnea and face social and psychological challenges from poor self esteem.
Kids often turn their noses up at healthy snacks so a resourceful parent will learn how to trick kids into liking healthy snacks.
A good, healthy snack is one that offers enough calories to satisfy energy needs, enough protein and fiber to satisfy hunger. Here are five favorites around our house: Fruit A variety of fruits offer great nutrition. Most kids don't avoid fruit because they don't like it but because they are too lazy to clean it and peel it or slice it up. We found that if we prepared a tray of peeled and sliced fruit and left it out that it disappeared 100% of the time. We were even able to slip a few veggies in such as carrots, celery and, if we were feeling frisky some broccoli.
Peanut Butter Peanut butter is a good source of protein and fiber.
The secret is getting away from PB&J on white bread.
Try combining with whole grain bread or even a whole grain waffle or rice cake.
Try yogurt instead of jam, or make a pure fruit purée to complement the peanut butter.
Sliding a little peanut butter on celery sticks is also a favorite.
Quesadillas Kids love quesadillas.
Cheese is a decent source of calcium and protein but is also high in fat and a typical flour tortilla is another source of fat.
Instead of only cheese and a white flour tortilla, go with a whole wheat tortilla and add a thin layer of refried beans.
Dice up or shred some chicken or whatever leftover meat you have in the fridge, or pop open a can of chicken or even shrimp.
Add some mild salsa.
You've taken the cheesy goodness that make quesadillas a kid' favorite and added protein, fiber and vitamins for a super healthy snack. Yogurt Yogurt is already a favorite snack of many kids. The problem is that most yogurt brands are loaded with sugar and light on protein. Go with Greek-style yogurt instead.
It usually has twice the protein and far less sugar than the regular stuff. Add some fruit to liven it up.
Yogurt spiked with fruit spread over a whole-wheat waffle is irresistable! Smoothies and Shakes Diet shakes have been around a long time and they adapted easily as an excellent treat that kids love.
Start with 100% juice and add fruit and yogurt to taste.
You can also use non-fat milk or soy milk.
It's easy to come up with yummy shakes that are nutrition rich. Experiment because the combinations are limitless.
Be creative and don't be discouraged if not every effort is a home-run.

Your child's first semester at college can be a challenge - not only for him, but also for you! Here are some tips for weathering that first semester away.
Start early - don't wait until the last week to think about the clothing and supplies your student will need, and don't wait until the last week to communicate everything you feel the need to tell your fledgling teen.
Stay in touch - but let your child lead, if possible.
Do make your expectations for communication clear -- whether your minimum is a phone call a week or an e-mail every other day.
Know that your home life will change.
Whether or not you still have children at home, the downsizing of your household will have ripple effects on all of you. Your relationships with each other will change.
Acknowledge this fact, and be patient as you come to a new equilibrium.

Born in a family with three older girls, with the youngest girl already thirteen years older than him, my brother grew up being able to connect with older adults. It was obvious that the small family couldn't afford it so she turned to the Little Baby Face Foundation, a Manhattan-based organization that provides free surgery for children with facial deformities who have a financial need. Nadia had the $40,000 operation on her ears, also called an otoplasty.
Nadia says she feels like a new, beautiful girl and no longer has a problem looking at herself in the mirror.
Asked about how she felt about the bullies who tormenter her, she said: "I forgive, but I don't forget.
" Samantha- 7 In April, people around the world expressed their opinions and outrage when 7-year-old Samantha Shaw had her ears surgically pinned back to escape name calling and harassment. Also through the Little Baby Face Foundation, Samantha had a similar otoplasty as Nadia to pin back her cup ears and fix a fold on her right ear. However, having ear surgery on a 7-year old girl was quite a shocker to the public. Samantha had not experienced or acknowledged that she had been bullied, her mother finding the worst coming from grown adults, quoting one woman who went up to Samantha and said "Oh my God, what happened to your ears?" Samantha's mother did not want her daughter to become a bullying statistic; she instead chose preventative cosmetic surgery for her daughter's ears.
Samantha's only hopes were to wear her hair like the other girls in her class do and to get her ears pierced.

In addition to cleft lip or cleft palate surgery, it's the only cosmetic procedure acceptable for young children.
